High speed tool steel (HSS)

High-speed steel is an alloy tool steel defined as a material containing ≥0.6% carbon and 3÷6% chromium and at least two of the alloy additives, such as molybdenum, tungsten or vanadium with a total concentration of ≥7%. It is characterized by high hardness (up to approximately 66 HRC) and abrasion resistance. It retains these properties up to a temperature of approximately 600°C. HSS steel obtains the desired properties as a result of the release of secondary carbides during heat treatment of the material
