Sulfur embrittlement

Sulfur is a harmful contaminant of steel, it occurs in the form of sulfides; as FeS, it causes steel to become brittle during hot forming. Intentionally introduced into free-cutting steel in the presence of manganese, it improves machinability. The phosphorus content reduces the plastic properties of steel, making it brittle.
