Heat affected zone (HAZ)

Heat affected zone – the area around the weld in welded metal materials and thermoplastics. The microscopic structure and properties of this zone are different from those of the materials being joined and the weld. The heat affected zone is created during welding, welding and laser and plasma cutting. The heat input from these processes, and therefore heat removal, affects the material around the weld or cut line. The degree and area of change in properties in the zone depends on the type of materials to be joined, the electrode material and the intensity and concentration of heat supplied in the welding or cutting process.
